TW: rough mentions of genitalia

General definition:

Hermaphrodite is a medical term originally used for all intersex beings, but is now used strictly for intersex animals and plants. This term has been reclaimed now strictly for animals and plants who identify with having both male and female genitalia. This term may not be used for, by, or against those who are entirely human. It can alternatively or more simply be defined as a non-human who is intersex, but does not like the term intersex.

This is the oldest hermaphrodite flag known. It’s rather outdated, though. Please don’t judge people for having this flag, none of the newer ones are in print as of yet.
The colours have unknown meaning.

This is the newest hermaphrodite flag. The colours are all based on hermaphroditic flowers. In order, all the colours represent; roses, petunia, lilies, magnolia, horse chestnut blossom, linden, daffodils, sunflowers, and mango tree blossoms.

An alternative version of the newest hermaphrodite flag inspired by the Johnathan Andrew transsexual flag.

Myths and Truths:

M: That’s intersexist!
T: Yes, when used for humans. This term is now for us non-humans, nobody else. We as the hermaphrodite community are very heavily against using this term in a discriminatory manner.

M: That’s not natural/possible!
T: There are tons of animals who are naturally occurring hermaphrodites, including (but not limited to) snails, 20+ families of fish, starfish and other echinoderms, worms, bearded dragons, cats, dogs, even slugs.

M: If it’s possible, explain it!
T: We don’t owe you or anyone other than our doctors an explanation of our genitalia.

M: You’re a futa? That’s so hot.
T: No. Do NOT boil us down to just our genitals. Do NOT call us futas either, it’s an incredibly offensive and objectifying slur.

M: You’re not a [insert species here]!
T: And who are you to tell us our species? Exactly, nobody.

Frequently Asked Questions (and answers):

Q: Why not just use intersex?
A: We all have our reasons. Personally, I find the term intersex too human.

Q: Why/how are you not human?
A: There’s two (maybe more) possibilities.
Possibility one (my scenario)
Possibility two

Q: How do I know if I’m a hermaphrodite?
A: From my personal experience, I always felt like everything was wrong with my body, specifically genitals. I tried everything, every label, but I couldn’t find anything at all that fit me. But after looking hard enough, I found out about the term hermaphrodite. It say so well with me, I finally felt like I knew myself! So I reclaimed the term and brushed its history off. If you are a hermaphrodite, good for you! We’re all very happy for you to join us!
